From winter train rides to strolling our Historic Main Avenue or adventuring in the snow on some of our fabulous trails, you will find something for everyone to enjoy. Our beautiful mountains and endless terrain make it the perfect place to enjoy alpine skiing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and much more. Winter Events

Durango is filled with some fun filled events that you won’t want to miss. Holiday time is always jam packed with some favorite holiday traditional events such as the Nutcracker Ballet, Bar D Wranglers Christmas Jubilee, and many others. See some our local favorites you won’t want to miss.

Winter Attractions

Durango has several unique attractions in the area. Spend a winters day on board the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. This unforgettable excursion will take you through the beautiful sights of the San Juan National Forest offering spectacular views of snowcapped mountains and the Animas River. The winter train departs from the Durango Depot up through the San Juan National Forest to Cascade Village. At Cascade Village passengers can get out for a fire-side lunch, photo opportunities or a walk along the Animas River for a 60-minute layover. The trip will take approximately 5.25 hours roundtrip. Reservations for the Cascade Canyon Winter Train is available Mid-November through early May.

Durango is lucky to have its own ski resort right in our backyard. Purgatory Mountain Resort is located just 30 minutes north of Durango. Offering 1,605 acres of terrain ranging from beginner to steep tree trails to wide open cruisers. Purgatory Resort was named North America’s Best Ski Value by Trip Advisor for three years running. Located in the rugged San Juan Mountains, Purgatory receives an abundance of snow each year. Average snowfall is over 260 inches each year (that's over 21 feet!).
